From Homeroom to Homework: A 9th Grader’s Daily Journey
Written by Ava Weinstein, Communications Intern at EFTC.
Good morning from 9th grade! If you're reading this, it might have been a while since you were in 9th grade (or maybe not). If you're curious to see—or be reminded of—what a 9th-grade school day looks like, read on!
We started the day in homeroom, gathering and preparing for the lessons ahead. Our first class was music. We began by organizing our materials and jotting down the chords for a few new songs. Once everyone was ready, we received our assigned instruments and started practicing the chords we had just written. After a few repetitions, we found our rhythm and breezed through the song. Next, we rehearsed some familiar tunes, blending flutes, drums, and guitars into beautiful harmonies. Since today was a double music session, we had plenty of time to refine our skills. After playing on instruments, we moved outside to sit in a song circle, where we clapped and collaborated to create melodic rhythms together.
After music, it was time for a snack—bread with jam and a wheat drink—followed by break time. The courtyard buzzed with energy as students gathered to chat, laugh, and share special moments. Conversations ranged from class activities to favorite hobbies, strengthening the sense of unity across the school.
When the break ended, we returned to our seats and opened our notebooks for math class. Today’s focus was simplifying complex fractions. We tackled various problems, applying critical thinking skills to break down each equation and find the simplest forms.
Next was communications class. We switched rooms and jumped into finishing a project on inequality, connecting different themes and social justice issues to create a holistic understanding of their roots. Afterwards, we opened the space for reflection, where each student had the opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings. It was a powerful exercise in listening, respect, and empathy.
Since today was the day grades were handed out, we had an early lunch. We lined up to receive our meals—chicken with chimichurri, beans, rice, tortillas, and hibiscus tea—freshly prepared by the kitchen team. Back in the classroom, we enjoyed our food while discussing our academic goals, aspirations, and future study plans.
After lunch because of the grade submissions, it was time to head home. Parents arrived to pick up report cards and accompany their children. After a long but rewarding semester, students welcomed the short break ahead, ready to recharge for what’s next.
