La Experiencia de Finnuala en Education for the Children Foundation

At EFTC, we’ve always been lucky to be supported by dedicated, energetic volunteers - both at our UK and US bases, and on the ground in Guatemala. Volunteers of all ages and from all over the world come to support our teachers in the classroom, or bolster our behind-the-scenes work.

We also welcome interns, willing to share a little more of their time in exchange for insightful work experience. Recently, we were joined by Finnuala, an intern in our UK office in Nottingham. Finnuala had previously volunteered at the School of Hope back in 2020 - inspired by her time there, she decided to lend her hand with some Communications and Marketing work over our busy Christmas period.

En EFTC siempre hemos tenido la suerte de contar con el apoyo de voluntarios muy dedicados y llenos de energía, tanto en el Reino Unido y Estados Unidos como en nuestra escuela en Guatemala. Los voluntarios de todas las edades y de todo el mundo vienen a apoyar a nuestros profesores en las clases o a reforzar nuestro trabajo entre bastidores.

También le damos la bienvenida a estudiantes en prácticas, ellos están dispuestos a compartir un poco más de su tiempo a cambio de una experiencia laboral enriquecedora. Hace poco se unió Finnuala al equipo, una becaria en nuestra oficina del Reino Unido en Nottingham. Finnuala ya había sido voluntaria en la Escuela de la Esperanza en el 2020. Inspirada por el tiempo que pasó allí, decidió echar una mano con algunas tareas de Comunicación y Marketing durante nuestro ajetreado periodo navideño.

Finnuala, how did your volunteering experience with Education For The Children help you decide to intern for us?

I volunteered at the School of Hope aged 18, on my first backpacking trip after leaving school. With the help of the outreach team in the UK and Guatemala, I had a homestay arranged for me, and came to spend five weeks based in Antigua and volunteering in a third and fourth-grade classroom. My time there was completely new, and full of stimulating experiences. It was amazing to see the work the school does first hand, from the ceremony of mealtimes everyday, to the dedication of the teachers and endless enthusiasm of the students.

That experience ended up being hugely formative for me - I even ended up switching degree courses from Architecture to Liberal Arts, because I realised how interested I was in learning more about the world - from history to cultural studies to humanitarianism and non-profits in particular. When I graduated, I really wanted to apply this deeper understanding I’d gained to a practical, real-life non-profit organisation. The fact that I’d already been involved with EFTC made it so much easier to situate the remote work I would be doing as an intern, within the overall picture. I had a better sense of the impact EFTC makes, and how my work could contribute towards it.

Finnuala, ¿cómo te ayudó tu experiencia de voluntariado con Education for the Children Foundation a decidirte a hacer prácticas con nosotros?

Fui voluntaria en la Escuela de la Esperanza a los 18 años, durante mi primer viaje de mochilera luego de terminar la escuela. Con la ayuda del equipo de alcance en el Reino Unido y Guatemala, conseguí una estancia con familia anfitriona y pasé cinco semanas en Antigua como voluntaria en una clase de tercero y cuarto grado. Mi tiempo allí fue completamente nuevo y lleno de experiencias estimulantes. Fue increíble ver de primera mano el trabajo que hace la escuela, desde la ceremonia de las comidas diarias hasta la dedicación de los maestros y el entusiasmo sin fin de los alumnos.

Aquella experiencia acabó siendo enormemente formativa para mí; incluso acabé cambiando de carrera, de Arquitectura a Artes Liberales, porque me di cuenta de lo mucho que me interesaba aprender más sobre el mundo, desde historia a los estudios culturales, pasando por el humanitarismo y las organizaciones sin fines de lucro en particular. Cuando me gradué, quería aplicar los conocimientos adquiridos a una organización sin fines de lucro real. El hecho de haber colaborado ya con EFTC me facilitó mucho la tarea de situar el trabajo a distancia que iba a realizar como becaria en el contexto general. Tenía una idea más clara del impacto de EFTC y de cómo mi trabajo podría contribuir a ello.

What have you been working on during your time with us?

I joined the UK team at a busy time - it was coming up to Christmas, when we’d be working on the End of Year fundraising campaign and auction. Right from the start, I was involved in conversations about how to frame and market the campaign, and how to maximise the impact it could have. I put my art skills to practice designing flyers and social media content, and prepared materials to share with local businesses as part of our outreach.

One thing I’ve really enjoyed doing is helping create the updates for our Nurture Network supporters - it’s really interesting deep-diving into the impacts EFTC has, and the myriad ways it supports students. 

¿En qué has estado trabajando durante este tiempo con nosotros?

Me incorporé al equipo del Reino Unido en un momento de gran actividad: se acercaban las Navidades, cuando trabajaríamos en la campaña de recaudación de fondos y la subasta de fin de año. Desde el principio, participé en conversaciones sobre cómo enmarcar y comercializar la campaña, y cómo maximizar su impacto. Puse en práctica mis habilidades artísticas diseñando folletos y contenidos para las redes sociales, y preparé material para compartir con las empresas locales como parte de nuestro trabajo de divulgación.

Una de las cosas que más me ha gustado hacer es ayudar a crear las actualizaciones para nuestros seguidores de la Red Nurture: es realmente interesante profundizar en el impacto que tiene EFTC y en las innumerables formas en que apoya a los estudiantes.

Why do you think this work is so important?

It goes without saying that the behind-the-scenes work charities do to facilitate their on-the-ground mission is absolutely fundamental. From basic administration to orchestrating fundraising events, and keeping our supporters in the loop with the goings-on at the school, there is always a mountain of tasks for the team in Guatemala, the UK and the US. As a non-profit organisation, these are made yet more challenging by financial constraints and limits to our resources. Volunteering or interning can make a huge difference for the team!

¿Por qué cree que este trabajo es tan importante?

Ni que decir tiene que el trabajo detrás de cámaras que realizan las organizaciones benéficas para facilitar su misión sobre el terreno es absolutamente fundamental. Desde la administración básica hasta la organización de eventos para recaudar fondos, pasando por mantener informados a nuestros colaboradores de lo que ocurre en la escuela, el equipo de Guatemala, el Reino Unido y Estados Unidos tiene siempre una montaña de tareas por delante. Como organización sin fines de lucro, las restricciones financieras y la limitación de nuestros recursos las convierten en un reto aún mayor. El voluntariado o las prácticas pueden suponer una gran diferencia para el equipo.

What skills have you gained from interning with us - and what have you brought to the role?

During my internship I’ve learned how to use a variety of platforms - such as Mailchimp, Squarespace and Canva - as part of my responsibilities within communications and marketing. It’s been really useful learning how to use these. One of the challenges has been liaising with other staff in order to collect up-to-date information from the school - which is made difficult by a six hour time difference!

My studies - and volunteering experience - helped me situate my internship work within an understanding of Latin American culture, history and development. During my degree, I was also interested in the wider dynamics that non-profits function within, particularly on international and intercultural scales. I’ve found that a lot of the work my internship involved required the ability to communicate with language sensitive both to our supporters (large and small) and the scrutiny that a larger community of humanitarianism is subject to - particularly in a context involving working with children.

 Other skills I found useful included a design ability, and writing proficiency - but skills such as language would also be really useful. The most important thing to bring to an experience like this, however, is a genuine enthusiasm and interest!

¿Qué conocimientos has adquirido durante tus prácticas con nosotros y qué has aportado al puesto?

Durante mis prácticas he aprendido a utilizar diversas plataformas, como Mailchimp, Squarespace y Canva, como parte de mis responsabilidades en comunicación y marketing. Ha sido muy útil aprender a utilizarlas. Uno de los retos ha sido establecer contactos con otros miembros del personal para recopilar información actualizada de la escuela, lo que se ve dificultado por la diferencia horaria de seis horas.

Mis estudios y mi experiencia como voluntaria me ayudaron a situar mis prácticas en el contexto de la cultura, la historia y el desarrollo de América Latina. Durante la carrera, también me interesé por la dinámica más amplia en la que funcionan las organizaciones sin fines de lucro, especialmente a escala internacional e intercultural. Descubrí que gran parte de mi trabajo en prácticas requería la capacidad de comunicarme con un lenguaje que tuviera en cuenta tanto a nuestros colaboradores (grandes y pequeños) como el escrutinio al que se somete a una comunidad humanitaria más amplia, especialmente en un contexto que implica trabajar con niños.

Otras aptitudes que me parecieron útiles fueron la capacidad de diseño y el dominio de la escritura, pero también serían muy útiles aptitudes lingüísticas. Sin embargo, lo más importante que hay que aportar a una experiencia de este tipo es un entusiasmo y un interés auténticos.

Do you have any tips or comments for others who might be interested in volunteering or interning?

Working with Education For The Children has been an amazing opportunity, and I feel truly embraced by the organisation. I would highly recommend volunteering or interning here - you will feel you are learning as much as the children here are!

EFTC have supported me both as a volunteer and intern, helped me develop new skills, and given me responsibilities that make me feel part of the community that they are. I’ve learned a lot from both volunteering and interning, including skills which will transfer into a variety of career directions. It is also always deeply enriching and eye opening to work with other cultures. I feel very grateful to have been given the chance to help, when the work done by EFTC is so impactful.

¿Tiene algún consejo o comentario para otras personas interesadas en hacer voluntariado o prácticas?

Trabajar con Education For The Children ha sido una oportunidad increíble y me siento realmente acogida por la organización. Recomiendo encarecidamente hacer un voluntariado o unas prácticas aquí, ¡sentirás que aprendes tanto como los niños!

EFTC me ha apoyado tanto como voluntaria como en prácticas, me ha ayudado a desarrollar nuevas habilidades y me ha dado responsabilidades que me hacen sentir parte de la comunidad que son. He aprendido mucho tanto del voluntariado como de las prácticas, incluyendo habilidades que se transferirán a una variedad de direcciones profesionales. Además, trabajar con otras culturas siempre es enriquecedor y te abre los ojos. Me siento muy agradecida por haber tenido la oportunidad de ayudar, cuando el trabajo realizado por EFTC es tan impactante.
