Pedal Power: World Bicycle Day with BiciRuta502

We had an amazing time celebrating World Bicycle Day on the 3rd of June and our students learned so much thanks to the incredible BiciRuta502 project!

BiciRuta502 is on a mission to make cycling safer and more accessible across Guatemala. They’ve started by creating a model street in our very own Jocotenango, complete with bike lanes, pedestrian walkways, trees, and even free Wi-Fi. The project is all about connecting communities and promoting a healthier, more sustainable way to get around.

This first 420-meter stretch is part of the larger LÍNEA 1 de Movilidad (LINE 1 for Mobility), aiming to connect Jocotenango with nearby towns like Pastores, Antigua, and Ciudad Vieja.

On the day, our youngest students visited El Azote Beer Garden, where those without bikes got to borrow some (thanks to the friendly team at El Azote!). They had loads of fun as they practiced their bicycle riding skills.

Our older students, meanwhile, had an exciting ride from the School of Hope into Antigua, where they even got to meet the municipality’s mayor. The day ended with a trip to the cinema to watch a documentary about BiciRuta502, giving our students a better-rounded understanding of the project's goals and impact.

We’re incredibly grateful to BiciRuta502, BAC Guatemala, and El Azote Beer Garden for making this day possible. BiciRuta502 has even promised to donate a bike parking rack to our school, so our students can cycle to school and park their bikes safely right outside!

More than just a fun day out, this was such a great chance for our students to learn about a sustainability-focused project that aims to bring positive change to their local community.
