Costumes and Cascarones

On February 9th, the vibrant spirit of Carnival came alive at the School of Hope in Jocotenango, marking an early celebration of a festival that is traditionally observed in Guatemala on Fat Tuesday, this year falling on February 13th. Our students embraced the festive spirit with an incredible display of creativity, transforming recycled materials into stunning costumes that dazzled on the catwalk.

Carnival is celebrated with particular enthusiasm in parts of Guatemala, such as the city of Mazatenango. Here, the celebrations are known for their colourful parades, masquerade balls, and lively music and dance, encapsulating the cultural heritage of the Guatemalan people. Traditions like the use of "cascarones" – brightly coloured eggshells filled with confetti – add a playful touch to the festivities, symbolising a final burst of joy before the solemnity of Lent.

The schoolyard buzzed with excitement as our students showcased their carefully crafted costumes, each a masterpiece of imagination. Some of our talented students took to the stage to perform, setting the soundtrack for the celebration. Others prepared dance choreographies, inviting everyone to join in and hit the dance floor.

Time and time again we are amazed by the creativity, talent, and community spirit that thrive at the School of Hope.
